Title: Lian See, winner of the Dermal Angel Award!
Date: 12-Jul-2003

Congratulations Lian See, winner of the Dermal Angel Award!

Remember Lim Lian See? – she was our volunteer featured in SHELTER’s newsletter, SHELTER News, the April-June 2002 issue.

Currently, you may have seen her face in major newspapers as part of the advertising campaign linked to the Dermal Angel Award.

Lian See was short listed in April 2003 by Abbott Laboratories (M) Sdn Bhd, a pharmaceutical company, who was in search of an exceptional individual, passionate in championing the rights of needy children.

She was then selected to be one of the two winners of the Dermal Angel Award. With her win, SHELTER received RM10000!

One element that marked Lian See as a winner was her outstanding efforts in being compassionate and benevolent to needy children.

In SHELTER News, April-June 2002, we wrote that Lian See took in one of the SHELTER girls called Lillian* to stay at her home in November 2000. Lian See had decided to mentor and train Lillian despite her being one with special needs. Lillian regularly helps out at Lian See’s salon and still stays at Lian See’s home together with another former SHELTER 2 girl.

Now, Lian See has taken in yet another girl to foster and t rain her in the hairdressing profession. This girl is Mandy*, 17 years old, also from SHELTER 2.

“Ever since I was 14 years old, my dream was to work in a hair salon and eventually own one. I’m very happy that Aunty Lian See is taking me in!” Mandy said.

Lian See also secured scholarships from two international schools of hairdressing for full hairdressing certificate courses for two SHELTER girls. This course will give the girls accreditation and enable them to become instructors in the future.

Lian See’s vision is to one day set up a hairdressing academy cum salon with the aim of helping more under-privileged teenagers get a good start in the working world.

Lian See’s story is inspiring. She has made a tremendous difference to the lives of under-privileged teenage girls.

*not their real names.
