SH1Shelter 1

Shelter 1 is a home for children below the age of 12 who have been abused, neglected or abandoned by their families/parents/guardians. A few of our teenage girls, who have grown up in this home, continue to stay here so that they can have some measure of continuity of the place they consider home. They also are "elder sisters" to the younger children.

Most of our children here go to a Government school. Some, however, (those who are weak in their studies) go through a home schooling programme.

Our children are cared for by staff who work on a 24-hour shift, following a roster, providing rehabilitation and care for the children; an administrative officer who deals with the children's school matters, volunteers, visitors and children's events; a housekeeper/cook and a manager. We also have a team of very faithful and committed volunteers who assist us in tutoring our children.

Shelter 1 is located in Petaling Jaya. For further enquiries, please contact Shelter 1 at 603-77814885 or fax us at 603-77833413.

SH2Shelter 2

Shelter 2 is a home for teenage girls from 13 to 18 years. They are basically home-stay girls who do not go to school. It is located in Kuala Lumpur.

Many of these girls are street children who got into trouble because of the lack of care and guidance from their families. Shelter 2 conducts activities which can help the girls develop their independence equipping them with skills that can be used in society. We train them in tailoring and hairdressing. We also provide English and basic computer lessons. Knowing the importance of a balanced upbringing, we have also included music (mainly guitar) lessons in our programme.

Shelter 3

Most of the teenage boys between the ages of 13 and 18 at Shelter 3 are among the weakest students in their schools because of their backgrounds of abuse or neglect.

We have full-time staff to run the home on a shift basis to ensure the smooth running of the home. There are a good number of volunteers who help out faithfully on a regular basis. We greatly appreciate and value their time spent with our boys.

It has always been Shelter's hope to have a home of its own. In the past the children had to move from place to place each time the lease on the home expired. Children, especially those from difficult backgrounds, need stability and consistency in their lives. They need to be able to integrate and form good friendships with people in the neighbourhood and in their schools. Thus, Shelter decided to ensure a permanent home by purchasing a property although it would be a financial strain on Shelter.

In 2005, the dream of having our own home materialised and Shelter 3 finally moved to a permanent home in Section 8, Petaling Jaya. At this time we also combined Shelter 5 (teenage boys) and Shelter 3 so that there would be consistency in the way the boys were brought up.

SH4Shelter 4

Shelter 4 is a home for school going girls. The girls here come from similar backgrounds like our girls from Shelter 2. However, we find that the girls seem to have a greater ability to cope with school work and are therefore given a chance to complete their education.

Located in Kajang, Selangor, Shelter 4 is managed by full-time staff. The routine includes doing daily chores, such as cooking and cleaning their rooms and kitchen and attending tuition and computer studies. They are helped to be able to further their studies at various institutions after their SPM or STPM. We hope that these girls, given the right opportunities, can succeed in their future chosen fields of work.
