Title: Shelter 3's workshop
Date: 01-Feb-2016

The new added workshop at Shelter 3

Some years ago, SHELTER used to have two homes where the focus was on equipping teenagers, who are not academically inclined to be trained vocationally. The idea back then was that different teenagers have different strengths and talents. However, after that, a number of children and teenagers entered our homes at an age when it was hard to help them academically.  Our education system does not help any better as they are forced to enter the education system based on their age and not based on their education level when we send them to government schools.

The few years that we have with them are therefore very precious. Tertiary education for these individuals will be something beyond their reach. The best we can do for them is to secure a suitable job with a decent income. The worst thing that could happen is that they leave with no future and return to the vices that their parents or relatives are into. That is what   left them with us in the first place.

Today, we are bringing that idea back. With the generous help from the Mou Man Tai group, a workshop with a variety of equipment is available. There are saws, screwdrivers and many others available to be explored and hopefully mastered by the boys in time to come. Bosch, the electrical company, is keen to give a session or two to help the boys learn the basics. However, we need much more than that to cultivate the interest in some of our boys to pick up the trade. We have taken the first step in investing in a space and some facilities. Now we are looking for volunteers who are willing to commit, a long term, with the boys in building their repertoire of skills in this area of carpentry.
